This is the second bauble pattern I made. Like the first one it is pretty basic. It’s a simple mesh pattern. But the mesh is a classic and always looks good in my opinion.
Like I said in the previous blog I started crocheting covers for Christmas baubles in 2012. The first 4 patterns were pretty basic and I only wrote them up in Icelandic. But now I have decided to translate them to English and publish them on the blog.
You can buy this pattern as a printable pdf file on Ravelry.

Materials:
Yarn: Crochet thread size 10. I didn’t weight how much I used, but it’s just a few grams. I used Scheepjes Maxi Sugar Rush (50g, 280m) – color 105 Bridal White.
Crochet hook: 1,75 mm
Bauble size: 7 cm in diameter
Gauge: 17 double crochet = 5 cm
It is very important to have the right gauge so that the crochet cover fits the bauble as it should. It is possible to use a different yarn and/or a larger hook to make covers for larger baubles.
Construction: The covers are crocheted from bottom up.
I use meters and grams as a unit of measurements. I don’t have any sense for other ways to measure, and because of that I don’t feel confident in converting my measurements to inches or ounces or anything else. Hope you don’t mind having to do that yourself.
Crochet abbreviations US:
st – stitch
ch – chain
ch-sp – chain space
sl st – slip stitch
sc – single crochet
hdc – half double crochet
dc – double crochet
tr – treble crochet
*asterisks* – Repetitions are grouped together with asterisks.

The pattern:
Make a magic loop or ch 5 and make a ring by joining with a sl st to 1st ch.
Rnd 1: Ch 1 (does not count), 1 sc in loop/ring, *ch 4, 1 sc in loop/ring*, repeat from * to * 6 more times, join with ch 1 and 1 hdc in 1st sc. (8 sc + 8 ch-sp)
Note: In this pattern, the rounds are joined a little differently than is common in crochet patterns. This method is used so the next round begins neatly in the middle of a chain space. Some crocheters find this technique confusing and don’t care for it. If you prefer, you’re welcome to finish the round in the traditional way and then slip stitch into the middle of the chain space. That said, I recommend joining as shown in the pattern—it gives a much cleaner finish.
Rnd 2: Ch 1, 1 sc in first ch-sp (the ch 1 and hdc space), ch 4, 1 sc in same ch-sp, ch 4, 1 sc in next ch-sp, *ch 4, 1 sc in next ch-sp, ch 4, 1 sc in same ch-sp, ch 4, 1 sc in next ch-sp*, repeat from * to * 2 more times, join rnd with ch 1 and 1 hdc in 1st sc. (12 sc + 12 ch-sp)
Rnd 3: Ch 1, 1 sc in first ch-sp, *ch 4, 1 sc in next ch-sp*, repeat from * to * 10 more times, join with ch 1 and 1 hdc in 1st sc.
Rnd 4-5: Ch 1, 1 sc in first ch-sp, *ch 5, 1 sc in next ch-sp*, repeat from * to * 10 more times, join with ch 2 and 1 dc in 1st sc.
Rnd 6-7: Ch 1, 1 sc in first ch-sp, *ch 6, 1 sc in next ch-sp*, repeat from * to * 10 more times, join with ch 2 and 1 tr in 1st sc.
Rnd 8: Ch 1, 1 sc in first ch-sp, *ch 7, 1 sc in next ch-sp*, repeat from * to * 10 more times, join with ch 3 and 1 tr in 1st sc.
Rnd 9-10: Ch 1, 1 sc in first ch-sp, *ch 6, 1 sc in next ch-sp*, repeat from * to * 10 more times, join with ch 2 and 1 tr in 1st sc.
Rnd 11-12: Ch 1, 1 sc in first ch-sp, *ch 5, 1 sc in next ch-sp*, repeat from * to * 10 more times, join with ch 2 and 1 dc in 1st sc.
Rnd 13: Ch 1, 1 sc in first ch-sp, *ch 4, 1 sc in next ch-sp*, repeat from * to * 10 more times, join with ch 1 and 1 hdc in 1st sc.
Note: At the end of rnd 14, before you join, you must put the bauble inside the crocheted cover. The last rounds of the pattern are made with the cover around bauble.
Rnd 14: Ch 1, 1 sc in first ch-sp, *ch 3, 1 sc in next ch-sp*, repeat from * to * 10 more times, join with ch 1 and 1 hdc in 1st sc.
Rnd 15: Ch 1, 1 sc in first ch-sp, ch 1, *1 sc in next ch-sp, ch 1*, repeat from * to * 10 more times, join with sl st in 1st sc. (12 sc + 12 ch-1-sp)
Rnd 16: Ch 1, 1 sc in each ch-1-sp, join with sl st in 1st sc, cut the thread. (12 sc)
The cover needs to be tight against the bauble cap, increase or decrease sc if needed, you can also make it tighter when you are weaving in the ends.
Note: If the cover is too long then it is possible to skip rnd 8 or if the cover is too short it is possible to repeat rnd 8 and then continue with the pattern.
