Crochet Covered Christmas Baubles #3 – free pattern

Third bauble pattern of my first 4 patterns. This time it’s a simple swirl pattern. This one is personal favorite of the four, I’ve made so many swirl baubles. When I make it in red and white it reminds me of candy canes.

Like I said in the previous blog I started crocheting covers for Christmas baubles in 2012. The first 4 patterns were pretty basic and I only wrote them up in Icelandic. But now I have decided to translate them to English and publish them on the blog.

You can buy this pattern as a printable pdf file on Ravelry.

Materials:

Yarn: Crochet thread size 10. I didn’t weight how much I used, but it’s just a few grams. I used Scheepjes Maxi Sugar Rush (50g, 280m) – color 105 Bridal White.

Crochet hook: 1,75 mm

Bauble size: 7 cm in diameter

Gauge: 17 double crochet = 5 cm

It is very important to have the right gauge so that the crochet cover fits the bauble as it should. It is possible to use a different yarn and/or a larger hook to make covers for larger baubles.

Construction: The covers are crocheted from bottom up.

I use meters and grams as a unit of measurements. I don’t have any sense for other ways to measure, and because of that I don’t feel confident in converting my measurements to inches or ounces or anything else. Hope you don’t mind having to do that yourself.

Crochet abbreviations US:

st – stitch
ch – chain
ch-sp – chain space
sl st – slip stitch
sc – single crochet
dc – double crochet
*asterisks* – Repetitions are grouped together with asterisks.

The pattern:

Make a magic loop or ch 4 and make a ring by joining with a sl st to 1st ch.

Rnd 1: Ch 5 (counts as 1st dc + ch 2), *1 dc in loop/ring, ch 2* repeat from * to * 4 more times, join with sl st in 3rd ch of beg-5. (6 dc + 6 ch-sp)

Rnd 2: Sl st into first ch-sp, ch 3 (counts as 1st dc), 3 dc in first ch-sp, ch 1, *4 dc in next ch-sp, ch 1*, repeat from * to * 4 more times, join with sl st in 3rd ch of beg-3.

Rnd 3: Sl st in next 2 dc (to 3rd dc of the 4 from prev rnd), ch 3, 1 dc in next dc, 2 dc in next ch-sp, ch 2, *skip next 2 dc, 1 dc in next 2 dc, 2 dc in ch-sp, ch 2*, repeat from * to * 4 more times, join with sl st in 3rd ch of beg-3.

Rnd 6: Sl st in next 2 dc, ch 3, 1 dc in next dc, 2 dc in next ch-sp, ch 6, *skip next 2 dc, 1 dc in next 2 dc, 2 dc in ch-sp, ch 6*, repeat from * to * 4 more times, join with sl st in 3rd ch of beg-3.

Rnd 8: Sl st in next 2 dc, ch 3, 1 dc in next dc, 2 dc in next ch-sp, ch 8, *skip next 2 dc, 1 dc in next 2 dc, 2 dc in ch-sp, ch 8*, repeat from * to * 4 more times, join with sl st in 3rd ch of beg-3.

Rnd 10: Sl st in next 2 dc, ch 3, 1 dc in next dc, 2 dc in next ch-sp, ch 6, *skip next 2 dc, 1 dc in next 2 dc, 2 dc in ch-sp, ch 6*, repeat from * to * 4 more times, join with sl st in 3rd ch of beg-3.

Rnd 11: Sl st in next 2 dc, ch 3, 1 dc in next dc, 2 dc in next ch-sp, ch 5, *skip next 2 dc, 1 dc in next 2 dc, 2 dc in ch-sp, ch 5*, repeat from * to * 4 more times, join with sl st in 3rd ch of beg-3.

Rnd 12: Sl st in next 2 dc, ch 3, 1 dc in next dc, 2 dc in next ch-sp, ch 4, *skip next 2 dc, 1 dc in next 2 dc, 2 dc in ch-sp, ch 4*, repeat from * to * 4 more times, join with sl st in 3rd ch of beg-3.

Note: At the end of rnd 13, before you join, you must put the bauble inside the crocheted cover. The last rounds of the pattern are made with the cover around bauble.

Rnd 13: Sl st in next 2 dc, ch 3, 1 dc in next dc, 2 dc in next ch-sp, ch 2, *skip next 2 dc, 1 dc in next 2 dc, 2 dc in ch-sp, ch 2*, repeat from * to * 4 more times, join with sl st in 3rd ch of beg-3.

Rnd 14: Sl st in next 2 dc, ch 3, 1 dc in next dc, 1 dc in next ch-sp, *skip next 2 dc, 1 dc in next 2 dc, 1 dc in ch-sp*, repeat from * to * 4 more times, join with sl st in 3rd ch of beg-3. (18 dc)

Rnd 15: Ch 1, *1 sc in next 2 dc, skip 1 dc*, repeat from * to * 5 more times, join with sl st in 1st sc, cut the thread. (12 sc)

The cover needs to be tight against the bauble cap, increase or decrease sc if needed, you can also make it tighter when you are weaving in the ends.

NOTE: If the cover is too long then it is possible to skip rnd 8 or if the cover is too short it is possible to repeat rnd 8 and then continue with the pattern.
