Crochet Covered Christmas Baubles #4 – free pattern

Fourth and last of the my first 4 bauble patterns. At the time of making them I felt that this one was the most complex of them. Therefor this was my last go to pattern.

Like I said in the previous blog I started crocheting covers for Christmas baubles in 2012. The first 4 patterns were pretty basic and I only wrote them up in Icelandic. But now I have decided to translate them to English and publish them on the blog.

You can buy this pattern as a printable pdf file on Ravelry.

Materials:

Yarn: Crochet thread size 10. I didn’t weight how much I used, but it’s just a few grams. I used Scheepjes Maxi Sugar Rush (50g, 280m) – color 105 Bridal White.

Crochet hook: 1,75 mm

Bauble size: 7 cm in diameter

Gauge: 17 double crochet = 5 cm

It is very important to have the right gauge so that the crochet cover fits the bauble as it should. It is possible to use a different yarn and/or a larger hook to make covers for larger baubles.

Construction: The covers are crocheted from bottom up.

I use meters and grams as a unit of measurements. I don’t have any sense for other ways to measure, and because of that I don’t feel confident in converting my measurements to inches or ounces or anything else. Hope you don’t mind having to do that yourself.

Crochet abbreviations US:

st – stitch
ch – chain
ch-sp – chain space
sl st – slip stitch
sc – single crochet
dc – double crochet
*asterisks* – Repetitions are grouped together with asterisks.
[brackets] – stitches that are grouped together with brackets are all worked in the same stitch.

The pattern:

Make a magic loop or ch 6 and make a ring by joining with a sl st to 1st ch.

Rnd 1: Ch 3 (counts as 1st dc), 17 dc in loop/ring, join with sl st in 3rd ch of beg-3. (18 dc)

Rnd 2: [Ch 4 (counts as 1st dc + ch 1), 1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc] in first st (same as sl st join), skip 2 st, *[1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc] in next st, skip 2 st*, repeat from * to * 4 more times, join with sl st in 3rd ch of beg-4.

From this point on in the pattern, when it says to crochet into the middle dc, it refers to the middle dc of the 3 dc‘s that are worked in the same st.

Rnd 3: Sl st over to middle dc, [ch 4 (counts as 1st dc + ch 1), 1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc] in first middle dc, ch 3, *[1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc] in the next middle dc, ch 3*, repeat from * to * 4 more times, join with sl st in 3rd ch of beg-4.

Rnd 4: Sl st over to middle dc, [ch 4, 1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc] in first middle dc, ch 2, 1 sc in first ch-3-sp, ch 2 *[1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc] in the next middle dc, ch 2, 1 sc in first ch-3-sp, ch 2*, repeat from * to * 4 more times, join with sl st in 3rd ch of beg-4.

Rnd 5: Sl st over to middle dc, [ch 4, 1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc] in first middle dc, ch 5, *[1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc] in the next middle dc, ch 5*, repeat from * to * 4 more times, join with sl st in 3rd ch of beg-4.

Rnd 6: Sl st over to middle dc, [ch 4, 1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc] in first middle dc, ch 3, 1 sc in first ch-5-sp, ch 3 *[1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc] in the next middle dc, ch 3, 1 sc in first ch-5-sp, ch 3*, repeat from * to * 4 more times, join with sl st in 3rd ch of beg-4.

Rnd 7: Sl st over to middle dc, [ch 4, 1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc] in first middle dc, ch 7, *[1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc] in the next middle dc, ch 7*, repeat from * to * 4 more times, join with sl st in 3rd ch of beg-4.

Rnd 8: Sl st over to middle dc, [ch 4, 1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc] in first middle dc, ch 4, 1 sc in first ch-7-sp, ch 4 *[1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc] in the next middle dc, ch 4, 1 sc in first ch-7-sp, ch 4*, repeat from * to * 4 more times, join with sl st in 3rd ch of beg-4.

Rnd 9: Sl st over to middle dc, [ch 4, 1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc] in first middle dc, ch 7, *[1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc] in the next middle dc, ch 7*, repeat from * to * 4 more times, join with sl st in 3rd ch of beg-4.

Rnd 10: Sl st over to middle dc, [ch 4, 1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc] in first middle dc, ch 3, 1 sc in first ch-7-sp, ch 3 *[1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc] in the next middle dc, ch 3, 1 sc in first ch-7-sp, ch 3*, repeat from * to * 4 more times, join with sl st in 3rd ch of beg-4.

Rnd 11: Sl st over to middle dc, [ch 4, 1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc] in first middle dc, ch 5, *[1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc] in the next middle dc, ch 5*, repeat from * to * 4 more times, join with sl st in 3rd ch of beg-4.

Rnd 12: Sl st over to middle dc, [ch 4, 1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc] in first middle dc, ch 2, 1 sc in first ch-5-sp, ch 2 *[1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc] in the next middle dc, ch 2, 1 sc in first ch-5-sp, ch 2*, repeat from * to * 4 more times, join with sl st in 3rd ch of beg-4.

Note: At the end of rnd 13, before you join, you must put the bauble inside the crocheted cover. The last rounds of the pattern are made with the cover around bauble.

Rnd 13: Sl st over to middle dc, [ch 4, 1 dc] in first middle dc, ch 1, *[1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc] in the next middle dc, ch 1*, repeat from * to * 4 more times, join with sl st in 3rd ch of beg-4.

Rnd 14: Ch 1, 1 sc in each ch-1-sp, join with sl st in 1st sc, cut the thread. (12 sc)

The cover needs to be tight against the bauble cap, increase or decrease sc if needed, you can also make it tighter when you are weaving in the ends.
