After a few years of making the same baubles again and again I got bored of them and decided to make me some new patterns. This is my fifth bauble pattern but really I always feel like this is my first bauble design.
My first four patterns were pretty basic and I’ve always felt they could have been made by anyone. But this pattern, this one is not basic. That doesn’t mean it’s difficult, it’s just not basic. If that makes sense.
I made 3 patterns in 2015 but I didn’t finish writing them up until 2017. And that’s also when I published them on Ravelry and Etsy. Since publishing the patterns, this one has been my most sold bauble pattern. Which is totally understandable cause it’s very pretty – even if I say so myself.
You can buy this pattern as a printable pdf file on Ravelry.

Materials:
Yarn: Crochet thread size 10. I didn’t weight how much I used, but it’s just a few grams. I used Scheepjes Maxi Sugar Rush (50g, 280m) – color 105 Bridal White.
Crochet hook: 1,5 mm
Bauble size: 6 cm in diameter
Gauge: 18 double crochet = 5 cm
It is very important to have the right gauge so that the crochet cover fits the bauble as it should. It is possible to use a different yarn and/or a larger hook to make covers for larger baubles.
Construction: The covers are crocheted from bottom up.
I use meters and grams as a unit of measurements. I don’t have any sense for other ways to measure, and because of that I don’t feel confident in converting my measurements to inches or ounces or anything else. Hope you don’t mind having to do that yourself.

The pattern:
Make a magic loop.
Rnd 1: Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 19 dc into loop, join with a sl st to 3rd ch of beg-3. (20 dc)
Rnd 2: Sl st into next dc, ch 3, 1 tr in same dc as sl st (counts as 1st tr2tog), ch 3, *skip 1 dc, tr2tog in next dc (both in same dc), ch 3*, rep from * to *, join with a sl st in 1st tr. (10 tr2tog, 10 ch-sp)
Rnd 3: Sl st into next ch-sp, ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 3 dc in same ch-sp, ch 1, *4 dc in next ch-sp, ch 1*, repeat from * to * 8 more times, join with a sl st to 3rd ch of beg-3.
Rnd 4: Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 1 dc in next 3 dc, ch 3, *skip ch-sp, 1 dc in next 4 dc, ch 3*, repeat from * to * 8 more times, join with a sl st to 3rd ch of beg-3.
Rnd 5: Ch 2, dc3tog next 3 dc (counts as 1st dc4tog), ch 4, 1 sc in ch-sp, ch 4, *dc4tog next 4 dc, ch 4, 1 sc in ch-sp, ch 4*, repeat from * to * 8 more times, join with sl st to first dc4tog.
Rnd 6: Sl st in next 2 ch (this is done to begin rnd in middle of ch-sp), ch 1, 1 sc in first ch-sp, ch 4, *1 sc in next ch-sp, ch 4*, repeat from * to * 18 more times, join with sl st in 1st sc. (20 sc + 20 ch-sp)
Rnd 7: Sl st to next ch-sp, ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 3 dc in same ch-sp, ch 2, 1 sc in next ch-sp, ch 2, *4 dc in next ch-sp, ch 2, 1 sc in next ch-sp, ch 2*, repeat from * to * 8 more times, join with sl st to 3rd ch of beg-3.
Rnd 8: Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 1 dc in next 3 dc, ch 5, *skip next ch-sp + 1 sc + ch-sp, 1 dc in next 4 dc, ch 5*, repeat from * to * 8 more times, join with a sl st to 3rd ch of beg-3.
Rnd 9: Ch 2, dc3tog next 3 dc (counts as 1st dc4tog), ch 2, 1 sc in next ch-sp, ch 2, *dc4tog next 4 dc, ch 2, 1 sc in next ch sp, ch 2* repeat from * to * 8 more times but NOTE the last repetition of the rnd is different, instead of the last ch2 and make ch 1, join with 1 hdc in first dc4tog.
Note: The last rounds of the pattern are made with the ornament inside the crocheted cover piece. From now on you should try fitting the cover around the ornament to know when this must happen. If you wait too long you might have to do some unravelling to fit the ornament inside.
Rnd 10: Ch 1, 1 sc in ch-sp, ch 4, * 1 sc in next ch-sp, ch 4*, repeat from * to * 18 more times, join with a sl st in 1st sc.
Rnd 11: Sl st in next 2 ch (this is done to begin rnd in middle of ch-sp), ch 1, 1 sc in first ch-sp, ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-sp, ch 1, *1 sc in next ch-sp, ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-sp, ch 1*, repeat from * to * 8 more times, join with a sl st in 1st sc.
Rnd 12: Sl st in next 2 st (so that you are located in 1st dc), ch 2, dc2tog next 2 dc (counts as 1st dc3tog), ch 3, skip ch + 1 sc + ch, * dc3tog next 3 dc, ch 3, skip ch + 1 sc + ch*, repeat from * to * 8 more times, join with sl st to 1st dc3tog.
Rnd 13: Sl st to ch-sp, ch 1, 1 sc in first ch-sp, ch 1, *1 sc in next ch-sp, ch 1*, repeat from * to * 8 more times, join with sl st in 1st sc. (10 sc + 10 ch-sp)
Rnd 14: Ch 1, *1 sc in next ch-sp, 2 sc in next ch-sp*, repeat from * to *, close rnd when weaving in ends.
The cover needs to be tight against the ornament cap, increase or decrease sc if needed, you can also make it tighter when you are weaving in the ends.
