Crochet Covered Christmas Baubles #8 – free pattern

I was on a roll after I made the 3 new bauble patterns in 2015 and made 3 more bauble patterns in 2016. These have been my personal favorite these past years. The other 3 had more cover to them while these are more lacy – and therefor quicker to crochet.

I made these 3 patterns in 2016 but I didn’t finish writing them up until 2017. And that’s also when I published them on Ravelry and Etsy. Now many years later I’m publishing them to the blog 😊

You can buy this pattern as a printable pdf file on Ravelry.

Materials:

Yarn: Crochet thread size 10. I didn’t weight how much I used, but it’s just a few grams. I used Scheepjes Maxi Sugar Rush (50g, 280m) – color 105 Bridal White.

Crochet hook: 1,5 mm

Bauble size: 6 cm in diameter

Gauge: 18 double crochet = 5 cm
It is very important to have the right gauge so that the crochet cover fits the bauble as it should. It is possible to use a different yarn and/or a larger hook to make covers for larger baubles.

Construction: The covers are crocheted from bottom up.

I use meters and grams as a unit of measurements. I don’t have any sense for other ways to measure, and because of that I don’t feel confident in converting my measurements to inches or ounces or anything else. Hope you don’t mind having to do that yourself.

Crochet abbreviations US:

st – stitch
ch – chain
ch-sp – chain space
sl st – slip stitch
sc – single crochet
dc – double crochet
tr – treble crochet, yarn 2 times over hook
tr2tog – treble crochet 2 together
tr3tog – treble crochet 3 together
*asterisks* – Repetitions are grouped together with asterisks.

The pattern:

Make a magic loop or chain 6 and join in a ring with a sl st to 1st ch.

Rnd 1: Ch 3, 1 tr in loop/ring (counts as 1st tr2tog), ch 6, *tr2tog, ch 6*, repeat from * to * 8 more times, join with a sl st to 1st tr2tog. (10 tr2tog + 10 ch-sp)

Rnd 2: Sl st in next 3 ch (this is done to begin rnd in middle of ch-sp), ch 1, 1 sc in first ch-sp, ch 6, *1 sc in next ch-sp, ch 6*, repeat from * to * 8 more times, join with a sl st in 1st sc. (10 sc + 10 ch-sp)

Rnd 3: Sl st in next 3 ch, ch 3, tr2tog in first ch-sp (counts as 1st tr3tog), ch 6, *tr3tog in next ch-sp, ch 6*, repeat from * to * 8 more times, join with a sl st to 1st tr3tog.

Rnd 4: Sl st in next 3 ch, ch 1, 1 sc in first ch-sp, ch 7, *1 sc in next ch-sp, ch 7*, repeat from * to * 8 more times, join with a sl st in 1st sc.

Rnd 5: Sl st in next 4 ch, ch 3, tr2tog in first ch-sp (counts as 1st tr3tog), ch 6, *tr3tog in next ch-sp, ch 6*, repeat from * to * 8 more times, join with a sl st to 1st tr3tog.

Rnd 6: Sl st in next 3 ch, ch 1, 1 sc in first ch-sp, ch 7, *1 sc in next ch-sp, ch 7*, repeat from * to * 8 more times, join with a sl st to 1st sc.

Rnd 7: Sl st in next 4 ch, ch 3, tr2tog in ch-sp (counts as 1st tr3tog), ch 5, *tr3tog in next ch-sp, ch 5*, repeat from * to * 8 more times, join with a sl st in 1st tr3tog.

Note: At the end of rnd 8, before you join, you must put the ornament inside the crocheted cover. Last rounds of the pattern are made with the cover around ornament

Rnd 8: Sl st in next 3 ch, ch 1, 1 sc in first ch-sp, ch 5, *1 sc in next ch sp, ch 5*, repeat from * to * 8 more times, join with a sl st in 1st sc. (10 sc + 10 ch-sp)

Rnd 9: Sl st in next 3 ch, ch 4 (counts as 1 dc + ch 1), *1 dc in next ch-sp, ch 1*, repeat from * to * 8 more times, join with a sl st in 3rd ch of beg-4. (10 dc + 10 ch-sp)

Rnd 10: Ch 1, 1 sc in each dc and ch-sp, close rnd when weaving in ends, (20 sc).

The cover needs to be tight against the ornament cap, increase or decrease sc if needed, you can also make it tighter when you weave in the ends.
