Crochet Covered Christmas Baubles #9 – free pattern

This bauble pattern is my second favorite of all my bauble patterns. Something about them reminds me of my grandma and spiders at the same time. Kinda weird but that’s just what’s in my mind when I see it.

I’ve made so many baubles with this pattern, it’s easy to make and it doesn’t take me that much time either. Win win. AND it’s pretty. So win win win 😅

You can buy this pattern as a printable pdf file on Ravelry.

Materials:

Yarn: Crochet thread size 10. I didn’t weight how much I used, but it’s just a few grams. I used Scheepjes Maxi Sugar Rush (50g, 280m) – color 105 Bridal White.

Crochet hook: 1,5 mm

Bauble size: 6 cm in diameter

Gauge: 18 double crochet = 5 cm
It is very important to have the right gauge so that the crochet cover fits the bauble as it should. It is possible to use a different yarn and/or a larger hook to make covers for larger baubles.

Construction: The covers are crocheted from bottom up.

I use meters and grams as a unit of measurements. I don’t have any sense for other ways to measure, and because of that I don’t feel confident in converting my measurements to inches or ounces or anything else. Hope you don’t mind having to do that yourself.

Crochet abbreviations US:

st – stitch
ch – chain
ch-sp – chain space
sl st – slip stitch
sc – single crochet
dc – double crochet
tr – treble crochet, yarn 2 times over hook
*asterisks* – Repetitions are grouped together with asterisks.

The pattern:

Make a magic loop, or chain 5 and join in a ring with a sl st to 1st ch.

Rnd 1: Ch 4 (counts as 1 tr), 2 tr in loop/ring, ch 3, *3 tr, ch 3*, repeat from * to * 3 more times, join with a sl st in 4th ch of beg-4. (5 groups of 3tr + 5 ch-sp)

Rnd 2: Sl st in next 3 st (this is done to begin rnd in ch-sp), ch 4 (counts as 1 tr), 2 tr + ch 3 + 3 tr all in first ch-sp, ch 6, *3 tr + ch 3 + 3 tr in next ch-sp, ch 6*, repeat from * to * 3 more times, join with a sl st in 4th ch of beg-4.

Rnd 3: Sl st in next 3 st, ch 4 (counts as 1 tr), 2 tr + ch 3 + 3 tr all in first ch-sp, ch 2, 1 dc in next ch-6-sp, ch 2, *3 tr + ch 3 + 3 tr in next ch-3-sp, ch 2, 1 dc in next ch-6-sp, ch 2*, repeat from * to * 3 more times, join with a sl st in 4th ch of beg-4.

Note: In the following rnds you will be making a dc in another dc, I recommend working that dc deeper into the dc below instead of just going through the chain like usually. By doing this you don‘t get a gap.

Rnd 4: Sl st in next 3 st, ch 4 (counts as 1 tr), 2 tr + ch 3 + 3 tr all in first ch-sp, ch 3, 1 dc in next dc, ch 3, *3 tr + ch 3 + 3 tr all in next ch-3-sp, ch 3, 1 dc in next dc, ch 3*, repeat from * to * 3 more times, join with a sl st to 4th ch of beg-4.

Rnd 5: Sl st in next 3 st, ch 4 (counts as 1 tr), 2 tr + ch 3 + 3 tr all in first ch-sp, ch 4, 1 dc in next dc, ch 4, skip ch-3-sp between dc and tr, *3 tr + ch 3 + 3 tr all in next ch-3-sp, ch 4, 1 dc in next dc, ch 4, skip ch-3-sp between dc and tr*, repeat from * to * 3 more times, join with a sl st to 4th ch of beg-4.

Rnd 6: Sl st in next 3 st, ch 4 (counts as 1 tr), 2 tr + ch 20 + 3 tr all in first ch-sp, ch 5, 1 dc in next dc, ch 5, *3 tr + ch 20 + 3 tr in next ch-3-sp, ch 5, 1 dc in next dc, ch 5*, repeat from * to * 3 more times, join with a sl st to 4th ch of beg-4.

Note: At the end of rnd 7, before you join, you have to put the ornament inside the crocheted cover.

Rnd 7: Sl st in next 10 ch (this is done to begin rnd in middle of ch-sp), ch 1, 1 sc in ch-sp, ch 4, *1 sc in next ch sp, ch 4*, repeat from * to * 3 more times, join with a sl st to 1st sc.

The cover needs to be tight against the ornament cap, increase or decrease ch if needed, you can also make it tighter when you weave in the ends.
