The Sailor Slippers and Me

The other week at work we noticed that we were selling alot more of the DROPS Snow yarn than usual. Sure a DROPS super sale just stared and the yarn was on 30% discount – but still there was something more than that going on.

No matter how much we restocked the shelves we just couldn’t keep up. And eventually we ran out of yarn.

Turns out there was a knitting pattern trending on TikTok. And that pattern is the Sailor Slippers by Annie Sews.

After two or three days of watching all these knitters selecting colors for their slippers we at the store decide to join in. I bought the pattern. Bought some yarn and needles. And started knitting.

I’m a crochet first and foremost. I’ve known how to knit since I was 9 but crochet has always come more easy to me than knitting. This was my first time following a knitting pattern in English. And because I had no problem with following the pattern I think it’s fair to say it’s a good pattern 😊

Jóhanna the cat was a bit more judgemental 😅

The slippers were easy to knit BUT I can’t say that I enjoyed the project much. Half into the sole of my first slipper I had lost interest in the project. All those rows of just knit and purl again and again didn’t spark much joy for me 😅

I decided I HAD to finish them before I got to pick up another project. I knew that if I would take a break from them I would never finish them. And because I had lost interest slipper number two turned out a bit larger than number one. I just couldn’t be bothered to watch my gauge 🙈

Crocheting the slippers together instead of sewing.

I deviated a little bit from the pattern. The pattern says to sew the slippers together with kitchener stitch but I decided to crochet them together with what is called Flat Seam Join…or just slip stitches.

Before washing.

The slippers are knitted really LARGE and then they are felted. I was a bit nervous about the felting process cause I saw posts online of slippers shrinking too much in the washing machine. But the opposite happened to me. They didn’t felt enough.

After the 1st wash.
After 2nd wash.
After 4th wash.

After washing them 3 times in a row I decided to let them dry and wash them again. They are still a bit big – but I blame me not following the gauge for that 😅

Happy I joined the trend. Happy to be finished. I admire all the knitters out there that are making multiple pairs of slippers. You have more patience than I do 💪

Also happy with the colors I picked.

Now I just have to figure out what to do with them. I won’t use them myself. I prefer to be barefoot, don’t like wearing socks and get claustrophobic if my feet get too warm. I was purely in this for the experience 😅😅😅

Until next time – Elín
